Samtec
is an environmentally conscious company committed to staying aligned with
the environmental directives and "green" policies being implemented
worldwide. This includes the expanding lead-free initiative, the European
ELV Legislation, the WEEE Directive, the RoHS
Directive, as well as the forth-coming environmental policies from Japan
and China. See Samtec's
Environmental Policy Statement. |

Samtec is TS-16949
and ISO
14001 certified.
The majority of Samtec
products are compliant with the EU WEEE and RoHS Directives as they are
currently written. The table below contains the current directive, requirements,
Samtec's compliance, and compliant products.
Samtec's surface mount
products are compliant to JEDEC J-STD-020C. We classify our SMT products
as MSL Level 1. J-STD-020C is not applicable for through hole parts.
In order to ascertain
the substance composition, lead-free status, and/or directive compliancy
of a specific Samtec product, a valid part number is required. Substance
composition can be found using our interactive Material
Declaration program.

"Listed
below are Samtec's RoHS Terms:" (used on product pages in the current
full line catalog)
RoHS Compliant:
This product is compliant with the RoHS Directive (2002/95/EC) as it is
currently written.
Lead-Free Wave Solderable:
This product is compatible with wave solder pot temperatures to 260°C
with maximum exposure of the termination pins to the solder wave for 6
seconds.
Lead-Free Reflow Solderable:
This product can withstand the elevated temperatures of 260°C+ and
the longer dwell times required during lead-free reflow processing.

LEAD-FREE PROCESSING
|
| Insulator
Material |
Insulators
All Samtec plastic insulators are RoHS compliant, although not all will
withstand the elevated temperatures used in lead-free reflow soldering processes.
All Samtec plastic insulators are capable of withstanding lead-free wave
soldering for 260°C for 6 seconds, since the plastic is shielded by
the board from the peak temperatures required for the solder to wet the
tail. |
|
Lead-free processes
require a higher reflow temperature than tin/lead applications. Most customers
are using a SnAgCu solder alloy which has a melting point of around 217°C
(423°F). This higher melting point will require the reflow temperature
to increase from 215°C to 235°C (419°F - 455°F) all the
way up to 250°C to 260°C (482°F to 500°F) which could
cause an issue for some insulator materials. In certain conditions, lower
peak temperatures can be achieved. With that in mind, please view these
temperatures as guidelines. Customers should create a processing profile
according to their experience.
Other Liquid Crystal
Polymers can withstand 260°C+ and the longer dwell times required
during lead-free reflow soldering. Product Series using these plastics
are noted with this specification under the Processing section
of the catalog page.
Samtec has performed
several test procedures and exposed its parts to reflow temperatures up
to 280°C (536°F). Solder
Heat Resistance Testing (Pb-free) Test Reports are available for download
by right clicking on the appropriate test report from the list.
In accordance with
the European
Union 2003/11/EC Directive banning PentaBDEs (pentabromodiphenyl ether)
and OctaBDEs (octabromodiphenyl ether), Samtec's products comply with
this directive as it is currently written.
Contacts and Pins
Nearly all Samtec contact and pin materials are RoHS compliant. Some RoHS
compliant contact and pin materials may contain unintentionally added,
inherent, near trace quantities of lead and/or cadmium. Copper alloy components
may contain quantities of intentionally added lead within the 4.0% by
weight copper alloy exemption allowed by the RoHS Directive for electronic
components. Product Series not RoHS compliant may have options that achieve
RoHS compliance. Call Samtec if you do not see the RoHS logo on a Series
where you require compliancy.

| Plating |
|
Platings
All Samtec Gold, Nickel, Bright and Matte Tin, Copper and Palladium/Nickel
platings are RoHS compliant.
Products that are
all gold plated can withstand the elevated temperatures and long dwell
times required for lead-free reflow.
Standard bright tin
may discolor with the elevated temperatures and long dwell times required
for leadfree reflow. For this reason, Samtec is making Matte Tin plating
our standard tin plating on almost all product series. Matte Tin replaces
standard Bright Acid Tin plating on most standard product series.
|
| This change
will occur automatically. Samtec customers do not need to change their
part numbers or change the way they place orders. For example, if a customer
specifies –T plating (standard tin), they will begin receiving matte
tin. If a customer specifies – TM plating (matte tin), they will
continue to receive matte tin plating.
The majority of Samtec
products are already compliant with the EU WEEE and RoHS Directives as
they are currently written. This includes products that contain Samtec's
standard tin plating. However, some customers are required to change their
component part number to show that the product is RoHS compliant, even
if that product was already RoHS compliant. In that case, simply add the
letter "M" after the plating option callout (-TM, -SM, etc.).
