VITA 42 XMC

XMC, known as Express Mezzanine Card, was created by VITA 42 and was designed to meet the requirements of high performance systems in rugged environments. XMC modules consist of Multi-Channel Fiber Optic I/O, FPGA-based Processing, Fibre Channel, Gigabit Ethernet, and Bulk Memory.

Connector Specification

XMC specifies a Samtec SamArray® connector set for throughput. The YFS/YFW Series SamArray® system provides 114 pins in a 6 x 19 configuration (equating to 10 differential pairs in each direction), a 10mm stack height, and a 3.125 Gbps performance rating. Testing confirms that the SamArray® connector set can perform up to10 Gbps allowing for even faster speeds in the future.

For those who control both halves of the interface and want a “next generation solution” that is ROHS compliant, Samtec now offers SEARAY in a 6x19, 10mm solution.

Note - Samtec’s SEAM/SEAF Series is not a VITA 42 recognized connector set, but is recognized by VITA 57. For more information on VITA 57, please click here

*In addition to the 10mm stack height versions, VITA 42 specifies a 12mm tall XMC connector set. The additional 2mm allows for improved airflow through the system.

VITA 42 includes non-solderball XMC post-only connectors for paste-on-pad attachment. While these connectors provide acceptable attachment performance, Samtec recommends considering solderball equipped connectors for increased mechanical robustness. Samtec YFS/YFT Series SamArray® connectors with leaded solderballs are ideal for Military applications. For commercial users, RoHS compliant lead-free solderball versions are available.

In addition, the socket (female) side is available with either standard or low insertion/withdrawal force contacts. Standard contacts provide an added margin of protection in applications exposed to extreme shock and vibration. Low insertions/withdrawal force contacts are ideal for mainstream applications where cards may be installed by field personnel or see more frequent mating cycles.

VITA 57 FMC

Similar to VITA 42 XMC, the VITA 57 Field Programmable Mezzanine Card (FMC) standard provides a mechanical standard for I/O mezzanine modules. This standard introduces a methodology that shall allow the front panel IO of IEEE 1101 form factor cards to be configured, via mezzanine boards.

Connector Specification

The FMC standard specifies Samtec’s SEARAY connector set. The VITA 57 SEAM/SEAF Series system provides 400 I/Os in a 40 x 10 configuration or 160 I/Os in a selectively loaded 40 x 10 configuration, in 8.5mm and 10mm stack heights. All available FMC specified connectors are listed below.

VITA 66.4

Samtec's active optical Micro Flyover System, FireFly, first unveiled at DesignCon in 2013, was selected by Pentek as the optical backplane solution in their latest product, the Flexor Model 5973 3U VPX FMC carrier with a Virtex-7 FPGA. The Flexor Model 5973 features a high pin-count VITA 57.1 FMC site, Samtec SEARAY™ Open Pin Field Array Connectors, 4 GB of DDR3 SDRAM, PCI Express® (Gen 1, 2 and 3) interface up to x8, optional user-configurable gigabit serial I/O and optional LVDS connections to the FPGA for custom I/O.
